Welcome to the wiki for Racism in Videogames!

This is a project for Education 205 at Mount Holyoke College (Spring 2009).

Project Summary:

This project will explore not only specific instances of racism in videogames such as the Resident Evil 5 controversy and the Ocarina of Time controversy, but will also explore the history of videogames.  We will take a look back from the inception of video games in the 1980’s to today and try to identify whether there has been any trend toward anti-racism in videogames.  As there has not been much literature on the subject our primary source of information and statistics will be web based research, but given the digital nature of the subject matter this may be fitting.  It should be noted that we will only be exploring video games with original content and will not cover video games that were created based on books, movies or television shows (such as the James Bond games for example).  We exclude this genre because those games were created based on outside material and criticizing the source material goes beyond what we are trying to observe in the games themselves based on their own merits and the designers’ choices.

Your site has given me so much to think about - wow! Thanks. I knew there was considerable information about racism in video games, but I had not given it much thought. But given the number of young people who play these games, I can now see that the topic demands much more attention by educators and parents. Thanks for piquing my interest. Your site is just what I needed to get started on some basic information. I will now begin to follow some links and learn even more. Great resource!
